I’m American but I lived in both the UK and New Zealand for quite a while and this is my absolute favorite British dish. I’ve had it with both lamb (Shepherd’s) and beef (Cottage). This is a really easy recipe to follow even though it looks like there’s a lot of ingredients in the dish. With the mashed potatoes and cheese on top…yeah. This will impress any dinner guest whose never has one before. My household was almost speechless when I made it. An easy, yet impressive dinner that will capture the hearts of even the pickiest of eaters. I wonder how it would taste with venison…

Very tasty but I did make a few changes. I only used 1lb of ground pork and I put in like 3.5 tablespoons of the tomato paste. I also added a little bit of chopped red pepper. I omitted the flour and beef broth but everything else I followed the recipe and it was delicious

wonderful. perfect for a cool, gloomy day.

Fantastic! I added a bit more fresh garlic and other seasonings for a little extra zip…

Very tasty! I followed the recipe exactly except I combined ground beef & ground pork. My husband ❤️ it.

Quite liked this and will make again. I took some short cuts and tweaks and it turned out great. Browned ground beef mixed with chopped onions and bell peppers is something I make in bulk and divide into freezer bags in about 2 pound portions and always have on hand in the freezer. I used this as my base and just thawed and reheated in a frying pan. I used about 3 tablespoons of flour and doubled the beef broth and tomato paste, 2 teaspoons of garlic granules, several shakes of black pepper. I also added a “squirt” of ketchup to brighten the tomato flavour. For the potatoes I made 2 packages of instant garlic mashed potatoes which spread very easily over the top of the meat mixture and then sprinkled shredded cheese over the top. I made this the day before we actually used it and heated it at 375 degrees for 40 minutes since I was putting in a cold casserole. I want to make this again and double the recipe so that I can freeze one of them.

Not perfect, but pretty good. Could have use more mashed potatoes and flavor in the meat.

Made one regular and one with Beyond Beef as the protein for my vegetarian daughter .. the flavor was so delicious

Not a lot of flavor. The meat to potato ratio is way off. I’d do 1.5 lbs of meat instead of 2. I’d also do another potato. 35 minutes is way to long to cook it at 375 degrees. I cooked it for about 20 minutes at the top almost burned. Too bland.

Best Shepherd's Pie recipe I've had. Easily 5 out of 5. Just a little complicated for amateurs such as myself.

I am in love. This tasted amazing, even with extra veggies

Shepherd’s pie, comfort food turned out well, this dish must be eaten piping hot fresh out of oven. Cheese burger casaroll.

BEST SHEPHERD’S PIE IVE EVER HAD!! This was a HUGE HIT!! Delicious!!

It turned out delicious at the first try. Of course, as many other comments are suggesting, adjust salt and seasoning to your taste, have some more stock just in case.
Yummly User 4 years ago
Delicious but it needed more salt! I’d slightly increase the sauce amounts too, to get a bit bolder flavor - all easy fixes that I’ll do for next time!

My 17 year old daughter made this and it was absolutely yummy!

It was delicious. I doubled the recipe because I had my kids and grandkids over. They raved how good it was. Quite easy with using frozen vegetables. Cottage pie or shepherds pie is was delicious.

Great dish to put in leftovers from taco dinner

I made this for four servings instead of eight. I found the measurement for the beef broth to be a little off - I had to add some extra. I also added a little extra tomato paste just because I love the flavor. The dish was tasty but it felt like it was missing something.

Yum even better the next day!

almost exactly how I make it usually. some change in ingredients which made a nice variation to how I usually eat it.
i will say though (as a British woman) that Cottage Pie is made with beef and Shephards Pie is made with lamb. That's the difference 🙂

Amazing. We used a 50/50 lamb/beef combination. Just needs a little more salt for our taste but we will definitely be making it again and again.
