Description
Make this hearty soup whenever the mood strikes — there’s no ham bone needed! Bacon and cubed, packaged ham give the soup its smoky, meaty flavor. In addition to the crispy bacon sprinkled on top, you could also serve the soup with store-bought croutons. The recipe, which makes 6 cups, is a Yummly original created by Ivy Manning.
Ingredients

Directions
- Heat oil in a Dutch oven or other 5- to 6-qt. pot over medium-high heat. Add bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and crisp, about 2 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a small plate, leaving drippings in the pot. Set bacon aside.
- Add onion, carrot, celery, and thyme to drippings in pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is starting to brown, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, stir, and cook until fragrant, about 45 seconds.
- Add the broth, ham, split peas, and bay leaf and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium–low, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until peas are fall-apart tender and the soup has thickened, about 45 minutes.
- Discard the bay leaf. Season soup to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle soup into bowls and serve with cooked bacon sprinkled on top. Any leftovers keep chilled, up to 2 days, but the texture thickens as the soup stands, so you may want to thin it with a little water.

Followed exactly. I just added an additional 2 cups of water. Also I cooked it about 30min longer so the peas could break up more completely.

Should have used low sodium broth! A bit salty but very good flavor! I used yellow split peas and added smoked neck bones and fresh ham. We liked this a lot!

Delicious 🤤 doubled the amounts and went heavy on carrots/celery and ham. I had to get rid of a big ole ham and the kids loved it and so did I!!!
